Quilting for Charity

Quilting for Charity

I love seeing the impact sharing quilts and quilting can have on the community around me.

Being a quilter we get to make items that bring people warmth, comfort, and love. It’s important to me to share the love a quilt can give and to use my skills to help organizations raise money for their charity work. Over the years I’ve donated many quilts to different organizations. Some have been for auction or raffle to raise money for the organization. Others have been straight quilt donations.

In addition, I’ve participated in drives for homemade pillow cases for pediatric units in hospitals. I’ve completed Quilts for Kids kits, and sewed other items like masks and pouches for various communities.

This summer, I learned about a local organization that really touched my heart as a widow with two young children. Camp Erin in Philadelphia is a bereavement camp for kids who have lost someone significant in their lives. It’s a sleep away camp and the kids chose their bunks by picking the donated quilt on the bed they like the most. After their time at camp they get to take the quilts home. I raided my stash of quilts and sent them 7 this past year! And I’m working on a few for donation this year as well.

I also work for my guild, Philadelphia Modern Quilt Guild, as the Chair of Philanthropy. I encourage donations within the organization and help our members find the right fit for their donated quilts. Recently, I just donated my quilting services to the guild to longarm the guilds charity donation to QuiltConwhich is sponsored by our parent organization, The Modern Quilt Guild.

I love seeing the impact sharing quilts and quilting can have on the community around me.
